Flitch Of Bacon
The Street Little Dunmow Dunmow Essex CM6 3HTOn the main street of Little Dunmow
The Flitch of Bacon takes its name from the ancient ceremony that dates back as far as the early 12th century. The pub itself was built in the late 18th century
behind the black-and-white frontage
with red-tiled roof and tall brick chimneys
the bar is warm and inviting
a very pleasant spot to relax with a drink and a chat.
In the bar or in the restaurant at the back
diners can tuck into `proper' pub food such as steaks
steak & kidney pie
bangers & mash and curries. Sandwiches
baguettes and jacket potatoes are available for lighter or quicker snacks.
Upstairs are two en suite letting bedrooms
making the Flitch a comfortable
well-placed choice for an overnight or longer stay
whether on business or enjoying a leisurely tour of the area. The first port of call on any tour must be Little Dunmow's Church of St Mary
where in the chancel stands the Flitch Chair that was once used in the annual ceremony to find a local couple who married in church and managed to live for a year and a day without quarrelling or regretting their marriage. Their reward was a flitch or side of bacon. The ceremony
which has been consigned to history more than once
is currently celebrated every leap year in nearby Great Dunmow
which has several places of historical interest for the visitor
